The warning signs

Gum disease starts as gingivitis

Gingivitis is inflammation caused by plaque along the gumline. At this stage it’s reversible. Left untreated, it progresses into a more serious condition where the gums pull away from the teeth, the supporting bone breaks down, and teeth can eventually loosen.
If you’re experiencing any symptoms, it may be worth scheduling an appointment with Pruden Family Dentistry.
The tricky part is that it often doesn’t hurt, at least early on. The first signs that something is off include:

Bleeding when you brush
Gums that look red or puffy
Persistent bad breath

How gum disease is treated

Treatment depends on how far things have progressed. Here's what we offer:
01
Routine cleanings
Regular professional cleanings remove the buildup that causes gum disease before it becomes a problem.
02
Deep cleaning
Also called scaling and root planing. A more thorough form of cleaning that reaches below the gumline and smooths the root surfaces.
03
Maintenance
Once gum disease has been treated, you may need more frequent cleanings.
04
Evaluations
At every checkup we measure gum pocket depths and track changes over time.

The bigger picture

Why gum health matters beyond your mouth

Research has consistently linked gum disease to broader health issues; heart disease, diabetes, and complications during pregnancy are a few.
We're not here to alarm anyone, but it's worth knowing that taking care of your gums is genuinely good for your overall health, not just your smile.
What to expect

What to expect at your visit

If it's your first time in or it's been a while, we'll do a full gum evaluation as part of your exam. We'll let you know exactly where things stand and what, if anything, needs attention.
If treatment is recommended, we walk you through what it involves, what it costs, and what to expect during and after.
